The Egyptian Forum for Human Rights, in collaboration with researchers Ahmed Mufreh and Sanaa Ahmed, has issued a paper titled “Egypt and Human Rights Treaties: Important Steps Towards Democratic Transition.” The paper discusses the most important international commitments and obligations that the Egyptian authorities must ratify or accept in order to improve the human rights situation in Egypt.
This paper is part of the Emigrant Deliberations series. Emigrant Deliberations is a series of papers that have been prepared based on extensive discussions and consultations that lasted for more than two years under the auspices of the Egyptian Forum for Human Rights, regarding the present and future of human rights in Egypt. These discussions involved a wide range of human rights defenders, academics, and activists from the Egyptian civil society currently residing in European countries, the United States, Turkey, and Qatar. The papers represent an initial attempt to understand the roots and backgrounds of the deterioration of the human rights situation in Egypt, and an endeavor by the contributors to propose visions and alternatives that can form a long-term agenda for engaging with human rights policies in Egypt. These papers, which will be published gradually, aim to address the components and dimensions of the human rights crisis in Egypt, with the goal of analyzing them and proposing alternatives and policies to deal with them.
